Overview
The Iconostasis, is a word of Greek origin, meaning literally icon-stand, is typically made of wood, and is one of the most important architectural features of the Orthodox Church. One of the main functions of the iconostasis is to separate the sanctuary, where the Lord is permanently present, from the nave of the church, where worshippers assemble seeking the divine life. In doing so, it represents the gates of Heaven. The Iconostasis consists of two levels. The bottom one has the icons of the Lord Jesus Christ, St. Mary The Theotokos, and the Angels & Saints, and the upper level carries the Cross, the Eucharist icon, and the disciples. On the highest point of the iconostasis there is a large crucifix to allow the congregation to meditate upon the Crucifixion and how much suffering the Lord Jesus Christ endured to save us. The various icons on the Iconostasis declare the reconciliation between the two worlds, the heavenly and the earthly, establishing that all previous separation has been overcome through the Cross.
About this project
This project aims to provide a comprehensive, interactive, and visually engaging understanding of the iconostasis, a fundamental element of worship in the Coptic Orthodox Church. The website allows users to explore the iconostasis by clicking on each icon or element to reveal detailed information about its purpose, significance, and the theological messages it conveys. By dedicating time and effort to this project, we hope to enhance the appreciation and knowledge of this sacred tradition, making it accessible to both members of the Coptic Orthodox community and those interested in learning about Coptic Orthodox Christian worship. Our goal is to bridge the gap between visual art and spiritual education, offering a unique resource that enriches the experience of the faithful and fosters a deeper connection to the rich heritage of the Coptic Orthodox Church.
