St. Mary’s Song of Praise – Part 2 (Luke 1:49-50)

In part one of St. Mary’s Song of Praise we covered Luke 1:46-48 which focused on St. Mary’s humility. Today we will take on Luke 1:49-50 “For He who is mighty has done great things for me, And holy is His name. And His mercy is on those who fear Him from generation to generation.”.

In these verses St. Mary is acknowledging the grace she had received “for He who is mighty has done great things for me” (Luke 1:49), and she praises God for the mercy He bestows on all who will fear Him “and His mercy is for those who fear Him from generation to generation” (Luke 1:50). These words are embraced as a harmonious melody of gratitude, sung by the Blessed Virgin Mary in response to the wondrous favor bestowed upon her by the Father. This act of Divine selection resonates deeply with Coptic believers, affirming that God’s mercy knows no bounds, reaching across time and generations.

Father Tadros Malaty contemplates this and says, “We call her blessed along the generations, not as living and dying a virgin, but as a virgin in whom the exalted salvation work of God was transfigured. Every believer looking at her sees the exalted grace of God granted to mankind through St. Mary’s carrying and delivering the Baby Jesus to us.” We are continuously reminded of God’s mercy and this blessed and miraculous event through the prayers and St. Mary’s praises that adorn our liturgies.

In conclusion, the verses from Luke 1:49-50 inspire a transformation to gain mercy and the salvation from our Lord and Savior. It is also a profound and timeless expression of faith, humility, and praise. It invites us to embrace its messages in our own lives, seeking to magnify God’s greatness, express gratitude, trust in His promises, and work towards our salvation.
